One Rhino Each ... But what if there were more?

This is a photo of one Asian rhinoceros at the Philadelphia Zoo

Asian rhino, National Zoo

And this is a photo of one Asian rhinoceros on exhibit at the National Zoo, in Washington, D.C.

But what if there were more?

At the Philadelphia Zoo, staff would say there are two or more rhinoceros. At least that's how they spell the plural form of rhinoceros in some places on their website. (They also use the shortened form, rhinos.)

At the National Zoo, staff would say there are two or more rhinoceroses. At least that's how they spell the plural form of rhinoceros in some places on their website. (They also use the shortened form, rhinos, too.)

So, who is correct? Both!

And good for the Philadelphia Zoo and the National Zoo for teaching grammar with their facts about rhinoceros/rhinoceroses!

All the other zoo websites I have checked so far take the easy way out, and always spell the plural of rhinoceros rhinos.

A zoo should make you feel like you are in the animals' territory.
